Course Descriptions

Would you pass an infection control audit?

Presented by: Michelle Strange

This course focuses on the critical aspects of infection prevention in dental settings. Similar to how diners seek a food safety grade in a restaurant, patients deserve assurance about infection prevention. Baristas undergo food safety training; likewise, dental professionals must be equipped to handle infectious risks. The course will cover CDC inspection guidelines and essential topics to maintain a safe environment. By the end of the course, dental professionals will be wellversed in infection prevention measures and will be better equipped to provide their patients with a sense of security regarding their dental care.

UNDERSTAND STANDARD PRECAUTIONS PROTOCOLS:

Participants will learn and comprehend the necessary protocols for Standard Precautions, which form the foundation of infection prevention in dental practices. This includes proper hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and safe handling of sharp instruments.

EXPLORE THE HIERARCHY OF CONTROLS:

Participants will review the Hierarchy of Controls, a systematic approach to minimizing infection risks. This includes engineering controls, administrative controls, and work practice controls, enabling dental professionals to implement effective preventive measures.

REVIEW OPERATORY TURNOVER AND STERILIZATION PRACTICES:

Participants will gain insights into the importance of operative turnover and sterilization practices. Understanding the correct procedures for disinfection and sterilization of instruments and surfaces will ensure a clean and safe treatment environment for each patient

IMPLEMENT TESTING, SHOCKING, AND TREATING DENTAL UNITWATERLINES:

Participants will learn how to integrate regular testing, shocking, and treating of dental unit waterlines into their practice. Maintaining clean water lines is crucial in preventing the growth and transmission of harmful microorganisms during dental procedures.

Clinical Practice Guidelines

Presented by: Spring Hatfield

Course Description: Healthcare in every area should be based on evidence. Interestingly for years, the medical profession has evolved to provide better guidance and protocols to provide the standard of care across the board, whereas dentistry has stayed stagnant for many years. Dentistry to this day is practiced on a spectrum, while other areas of healthcare are more calibrated with treatment protocols. This course aims to teach the evidence-based clinical practice guidelines the ADA has set for best practice and standard of care.

Learning Objectives:

• Explain the concepts of Evidence-based Dentistry

• Understand Clinical Practice Guidelines for Antibiotic Stewardship

• Recognize methods for caries management

• Describe clinical practice guidelines for the evaluation of potentially malignant disorders in the oral cavity

• List clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of chronic periodontitis

• Review radiographic guidelines tailored to patient’s needs

• Comprehend when medical clearance is needed to treat patients with select medical conditions
