Presented by: Linda Rhoades

Speaker Bio

Linda Rhoades has devoted 43 years to the profession of dental hygiene, specializing in periodontics. She is a licensed hygienist, graduating from Both Prairie State College then Madonna University. She is a Professional Fellow and Mentor in the American Dental Hygienist’s Association. For the past decade, she has been a periodontal hygienist at Village Periodontics and Dental Implant Center in Oxford, Florida. Linda has enriched the profession through teaching both dental hygiene and dental assisting, founding two study clubs, and pursuing professional writing. She has published articles in RDH Magazine, Dental IQ, RDH E-Village, Dente Magazine, and the AGD magazine, Florida Focus.

Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to draw parallels between Irene Newman's pioneering journey as the world's first dental hygienist and the modern challenges facing today's dental hygienists.

Participants will gain an understanding of the historical development of dental hygiene, focusing on the contributions of early pioneers in establishing licensure and educational programs across various states.

Participants will explore how Irene Newman emerged as a social reformer amid personal tragedy, the Spanish Flu Epidemic, World War I, and the Great Depression.

Participants will explore Dr. Alfred Fones' foundational role in creating the dental hygiene profession, including establishing the first dental hygiene school in 1913 and encouraging his students to form the Connecticut Dental Hygiene Association, precursor of the ADHA. They will gain insight into his pioneering recognition of the oral-systemic link, which emphasizes the importance of oral health in overall health.
